Burdur Mehmet Akif Ersoy University (MAKÜ) Faculty of Economics and Administrative Sciences Social Work Department Faculty Member and Director of the Center for Aging Studies Application and Research (YAŞAM) Assoc. Prof. Dr. Deniz Say Şahin, Happiness Research Coordinator Assoc. Prof. Dr. Gökmen Arslan and Gölhisar Vocational School Health Care Services Department Home Patient Care Program lecturer Inst. Gör. Gülnihal Altun under the leadership of Burdur Hilmi Hafize Evin Nursing Home Elderly Care and Rehabilitation Center conducted ‘Sensory Social Interaction Workshops’ where the 3rd week activities have been completed. With the attention and focus exercises conducted within the scope of the workshop, both the young life volunteers and the nursing home residents are smiling.
MAKÜ Faculty of Economics and Administrative Sciences Social Work Department faculty member Assoc. Prof. Dr. Deniz SAY ŞAHİN stated, "These kinds of volunteer workshops not only benefit the elderly adults but also the youth, ensuring that young people become more active and responsible individuals in society, contributing to a more empathetic and cooperative future society." Additionally, while young people gain a sense of social responsibility, they develop their empathy through interactions with our elderly. Thanks to such activities, every segment of society becomes closer to each other," she said. She also mentioned that it is very gratifying that the majority of the volunteer students participating in the activities are from the Faculty of Economics and Administrative Sciences Social Work Department, thus it is very important for students to get acquainted with the practice environment in volunteer activities.
Nursing Home Activities: Elderly and Youth Together
Cultural, artistic, and sports activities organized every Thursday at Burdur Hilmi Hafize Evin Elderly Care and Rehabilitation Center are made open to the participation of the elderly along with volunteer students. These activities include many different activities such as art workshops, music recitals, memory games, and handicraft works.
Volunteer students play an active role in organizing the activities and ensuring the participation of the elderly in the activities. While young people spending time with the elderly helps establish strong bonds between different generations, it also reduces the feelings of loneliness and isolation among elderly individuals.
